The Piton Noire Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Folklore Short Story Contest
Calling all young storytellers of the Caribbean!
Piton Noire, a collective of writers dedicated to Caribbean science fiction, fantasy, and speculative literature, invites primary school students ages 9–12 to enter The Piton Noire Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Folklore Short Story Contest.
This exciting writing competition gives young students the opportunity to explore their imaginations, develop their creative voices, and tell stories inspired by the Caribbean world around them.
Piton Noire has published three volumes of The Flying Crapaud anthology series, with additional editions currently in development. Through its work, the collective is committed to creating a unique body of literature that celebrates Caribbean futurism, fantasy, mythology, folklore, and the limitless possibilities of Caribbean imagination. Now, we want to give the next generation of storytellers a chance to add their voices to that tradition.
Students are invited to write an original short story inspired by science fiction, fantasy, and/or Caribbean folklore.
Their stories might take readers into the distant future, introduce magical creatures and mysterious worlds, reimagine a traditional Caribbean tale, or imagine what could happen when the ordinary world meets the extraordinary.
Most importantly, the story must come from the student’s own imagination and be written in the student’s own words.
The contest will celebrate creativity, originality, imagination, storytelling ability, and the student’s connection to Caribbean culture and experiences. Winning stories will receive monetary prizes and will have the opportunity to be published in a special Piton Noire Kids Edition of The Flying Crapaud anthology.
This is more than a writing competition. It is an invitation for the young people of the Caribbean to imagine boldly, preserve the stories and traditions that make our islands unique, and envision new Caribbean worlds that have yet to be written.
